Huge Smile!!

I am incredibly happy to fill you all in on the last 24 hours.
Louis really turned a corner last night. Due in equal parts to his focus & desire, the amazing care he is receiving and the love of his family. His temperature regulation is improving, the pneumonia is under control and the chest tube came out this morning. In addition, the head dressing came off and his swallowing reflex improved enough for him to actually drink water. This may not sound like much but when denied for 5 days it becomes nectar. The narcotic based pain killers have been reduced and Lou is much more coherent and conversant, he actually exhausted the physical therapists.

We hooked up with the University of Utah Spinal Rehab and think that there is good chance to move North on Thursday...

Next steps;
Secure stabilization and move on Thursday (fingers crossed!), followed by 3-4 weeks of intensive rehab including physical and occupational.

I feel like we have an amazing trauma team here who saved his life and an amazing trauma team behind the scenes, that would be you all, giving love and support as well as time, effort and work to help us continue this wonderful life.

Thank you to everyone for your continued support and concern. We're starting this page just so we have a central location where we can keep everyone informed about Louis. As many of you know, Louis was in skiing accident at about 5:30 last night. The fall fractured his spine in two places and severed his spinal column in his lower back. He went into surgery at around midnight and just got out around 8 am. His status is stable and we're hoping for a safe and speedy recovery. The doctors are currently working on getting him to a pain-free, conscious state. They performed 3 procedures throughout the night that resulted in the fusing of his c6 to t7 vertebrae. These appear to have been successful. Again, thank you all for your love and support and we'll try the best we can to keep everyone up to date with any changes.

Monday Morning 2/24/20 Good Morning Team Love-on-Louis (Thank you Stacey Bare for the perfect name for the Go Fund Me)!! The night was on par with the one previous. Yesterday we added a feeding tube to our arsenal as Lou has been unable to swallow properly so...no food, no drinks...sucks, but you knew this. At least now he is getting needed calories. This morning the doctor decided on a new focus. Previously stabilization was the goal, as of this morning we are shifting to getting Lou out of the ICU and into the University of Utah Spinal Rehab facility. Focus, focus on that! Anna Catino was brilliant in alerting the team at the U of Louis' situation and as I understand it, they have been standing by ready and waiting for him. I need to take a moment to let you all know what Erme and Anna did for us because they will not. From my perspective, there is no way that Louis would be here without Erme. I'm a Mess!

I'm a mess. What else can I say? My new norm is, well new and unknown. I have no real idea how or what I am capable of so we enter each day pensively. This state has me doubting my previous perceptions of independence.  A few weeks back I was wrestling with needing help from Jacki, Miriam, or anyone nearby, and wishing I could do more things myself. I would ask for help, immediately regret it and feel a sense of shame. How can I be an equal and giving partner in my marriage, as a brother, friend, father, etc. when physically I don't measure up? My moods would shift and Jacki, being closest, received the blunt end.  I then participated in a virtual outdoor adventure through Adventure United and set the intention of exploring the idea of independence vs. dependence. I joined a group of online fellows who despite living in the restrictions of the COVID world were game to gather once a day to share their daily experiences having adventures within these limits. Uns
